EO Clinic COVID-19 Impact on Agricultural Practices in Moldova

May 2020 - September 2020

Geospatial Earth Observation (EO) data is missing to a large extent and not used in Moldova as it requires advanced data infrastructure, expertise, and relevant resources. Given the COVID-19 crisis, EO and other new types of data were urgently required. EO methods were used to derive the spatial extent of the cultivated areas and crop distributions over the area of interest, characterizing the key indicator during the crop growth cycle such as ploughing, sowing, crop emergence, mature crop, and harvesting. Mallon completed the following tasks: • EO data acquisition, filtering and pre-processing • Development of reference time series for 2017 – 2019 • Cropland anomaly detection • Generation of Service results and outputs In addition, retrospective analysis was completed for the years 2017, 2018 and 2019 with more emphasis on cereal crops like maize, wheat, and barley. The analysis was performed at the scale and resolution of Sentinel-2 dataset.

EO Clinic Assessment of the Potential of Gum and Resin-Bearing Tree Species in Ethiopia

March 2022 - April 2022

The project involved detecting and identifying gum and resin bearing trees species within the greater Afar region of Ethiopia and assessing their health. Due to a particularly large area of interest in the Afar region, a large amount of data had to be processed in the most efficient manner. Mallon conducted this task utilizing Google’s remote sensing cloud processing platform Google Earth Engines (GEE). Following tasks were accomplished: • Firstly, high-resolution planet data (5m), made freely available by Norway's International Climate and Forests Initiative (NICFI) was used for the investigation. • Vegetation indices such as Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) were computed which was then used to generate time series dataset. • Using the machine learning approach based on Linear Regression, statistical analysis was conducted.

Hedgerow Mapping and Monitoring

September 2020 - December 2023

The project comprises two components: (i) comprehensive mapping of hedgerows and (ii) monitoring of the hedgerows. The first component involved using high resolution imagery to predict the location of hedgerow features in and around Ireland’s LPIS parcels. Hedgerows are designated as landscape features under CAP monitoring and are required to preserve and maintain in order to be eligible for payment. From 2020 to 2022, Mallon undertook the task of generating a comprehensive map of hedgerow for the republic of Ireland using high-resolution (Bluesky) imagery and digital surface models. The work involved collection of training data, CNN model development, application, and validation. The hedgerow maps were generated with the accuracy of 94%. The second component involved monitoring of the existing hedgerows and detection of the removal activities. The workflow was developed using Sentinel-2 data as it offers higher temporal resolution which allows frequent monitoring.

Development of Clearfelling Marker

November 2022 - May 2024

The development of forestry marker involved the detection of various forestry activities for monitoring of the forestry resources and regulatory compliance. The activities that are of interest to the paying agencies are clearfelling, afforestation and thinning of the eligible forests. Machine learning models, particularly random forest and Convolutional neural networks were used on historical archive of the forestry data. Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data sets were used for the model development. Currently, the marker is run periodically to detect clearfelling events within the forestry parcels.
