What is Future Mobility Campus Ireland?

Future Mobility Campus Ireland is Ireland’s leading hub for research, development, and innovation in the international mobility and transportation sector. Located in Shannon, Ireland, adjacent to Shannon Airport, FMCI is the country's first dedicated testbed for future mobility. Our facilities focus on comprehensive mobility technologies that span both ground and air use cases.

We assist organisations to conceive, develop, trial, and deploy societally transformative transport solutions using our campus and its amenities as a starting point. We envisioned a space where the dreams of a smarter, safer, and more sustainable future become reality. Think of FMCI as a living lab: a place where collaboration drives progress and where the boundaries of what’s possible in mobility are constantly being redefined.

Areas of Focus

FMCI focuses on four main pillars of mobility innovation:

  1. Advanced Air Mobility: From integrating unmanned aerial systems into shared airspace to enabling urban and regional air mobility and drone logistics, FMCI facilities and expertise provide an unparalleled platform for enhancing the air mobility landscape. Our dedicated air mobility zone includes a vertiport, drone testing corridors, and U-space air traffic management capabilities, allowing for the safe and seamless development of next-generation air transport solutions.
  2. Smart Cities: FMCI's Smart City infrastructure spans 12 km of open roads in the Shannon Free Zone. This network supports the integration of IoT systems, data analytics, and sustainable infrastructure to create more connected and efficient urban environments.
  3. Transport Infrastructure: The comprehensive mobility testbed at Future Mobility Campus Ireland includes a real-world environment for testing mobility innovations. The Smart City road network, private proving ground, retrofitted test vehicles, drone port, and cutting-edge simulation and digital twin technology at FMCI facilitate the validation and advancement of future mobility solutions in autonomous driving, micro-mobility, smart cities, V2X communications, and more.
  4. Training and Development: FMCI is committed to fostering talent and advancing knowledge in the mobility sector. Through specialised training programs, workshops, and collaborative projects, we equip professionals and researchers with the skills and expertise needed to drive innovation in future mobility technologies.

Research Projects

Part of FMCI’s efforts to drive innovation in the mobility industry include actively seeking out national and European research projects that address the evolving challenges of transport and infrastructure. Mobility research at FMCI brings together experts, industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers to develop, test, and implement real-world solutions. As an active participant in European-funded initiatives, we collaborate with local and international partners on enhancing autonomous and electric vehicle technologies, advanced air mobility solutions, and sustainable transport systems.

Regulations and Policy

As Ireland’s leading hub for mobility transformation, Future Mobility Campus Ireland plays a key role in supporting certification, regulatory alignment, and commercialisation of emerging transport technologies. We provide expert guidance on autonomous vehicle deployment, drone operation standards, and next-generation transport infrastructure to ensure seamless integration within legal and policy frameworks. By bridging the gap between innovation and regulation, FMCI helps foster safe, scalable, and future-proof mobility solutions.

Whether you’re testing new vehicle technologies, exploring air mobility solutions, developing smarter cities, or otherwise transforming the way we move people and goods, FMCI provides the platform, knowledge, and support to turn ideas into reality.
